Ennui se publicó en el segundo volumen de una recopilación de textos titulada Tales of Fashionable Life, que se publicaron entre 1809 y 1812. El segundo volumen fue particularmente bien recibido en Inglaterra, lo que convirtió a Edgeworth en la novelista de mayor éxito comercial durante la primera década del siglo XIX e hizo que se la considerara una de las grandes escritoras contemporáneas, al nivel de Jane Austen. La propia Austen se contaba entre sus admiradores, así como Byron, Stendhal, Turgenev, Trollope, Thackeray y, al menos de su novela Castle Rackrent, el rey Jorge III.
